Vastu Tips for Furniture Placement in Every Room

Planning furniture as per Vastu? Here are practical Vastu tips for placing your bed, wardrobe, sofa, TV unit, dining table and kitchen, room by room.

Many families in Gujarat like to follow Vastu Shastra when they plan a home, especially for the bedroom, the kitchen and the pooja room. The good news is that most traditional Vastu guidelines also make practical sense: they keep heavy furniture against solid walls, leave the centre of the room open and let in the morning light. Here is a simple, room-by-room guide to the guidelines people follow most.

These are commonly followed traditional guidelines. For a complete Vastu plan of your home, consult a Vastu expert.

Living room

  • Place heavy furniture, such as the sofa and large cabinets, along the south or west walls. Keep the north and east sides lighter and more open.
  • Arrange the sofa so that family members face north or east when seated.
  • The south-east part of the room is commonly suggested for the TV and other electronics.
  • Keep the centre of the room (the Brahmasthan) free of heavy furniture.

Master bedroom

  • The master bedroom is traditionally placed in the south-west of the home.
  • Place the bed so that you sleep with your head towards the south or the east. Sleeping with the head towards the north is traditionally avoided.
  • Leave space to get into the bed from both sides, and avoid placing it directly under a ceiling beam.
  • Place the wardrobe along the south or west wall, so that it opens towards the north or east.
  • Avoid a mirror that directly faces the bed. A mirror on a side wall, or inside a wardrobe shutter, solves this neatly.

Vastu also advises against clutter under the bed. If you have a storage bed, use it for neatly packed bedding and clothes, not for broken items or scrap. See our storage beds.

Children's room

  • Place the study table so that the child faces east or north while studying.
  • Keep the bed with its head towards the east or south.
  • Open shelves for books on the north or east walls keep the room light and bright.

Kitchen

  • The kitchen is traditionally placed in the south-east (the Agni corner) of the home.
  • Plan the hob so that the cook faces east.
  • Keep the sink and the hob apart, with some counter space between water and fire.
  • Tall units and heavy storage go best on the south or west walls.

Our guide to modular kitchen layouts shows how L-shaped and parallel kitchens can be arranged to place the hob and sink where you want them.

Dining area

  • The west side of the home, or a space close to the kitchen, is commonly preferred for dining.
  • Square or rectangular tables are generally preferred over irregular shapes.
  • Avoid placing the dining table directly under a beam.

Pooja unit

  • The north-east corner of the home is traditionally preferred for the pooja unit.
  • Arrange it so that you face east or north while praying.
  • Avoid placing it under a staircase or against a wall shared with a toilet.

Entrance and foyer

  • Keep the main entrance bright, clean and free of clutter.
  • A shoe cabinet with closed shutters keeps footwear out of sight. Place it to one side of the entrance rather than directly in front of the door.

When your flat doesn't allow the ideal direction

Not every apartment allows the ideal direction for every room, and that is where custom furniture helps. Because it is made to measure, it can be designed around your preferred layout instead of the other way round:

  • A bed sized to fit the wall that gives you the preferred head direction.
  • A wardrobe planned for the south or west wall, with its shutters opening the way you want.
  • A TV wall on a different wall, with the wiring routed to it.
  • A compact pooja unit that fits the north-east corner, even in a small flat.
