Why do some kitchens and wardrobes still close smoothly after 10 years? The hardware. Here's how hinges, drawer systems and soft-close fittings work.
When people compare furniture quotes, they look at the board and the finish. The hardware, meaning the hinges, drawer runners and lift-up fittings, is hidden behind the shutters, so it is easy to overlook. Yet these small parts are opened and closed thousands of times a year. They decide whether a shutter sags, whether a drawer full of steel utensils still runs smoothly, and whether doors slam or close silently.
Why hardware matters more than you think
- A busy kitchen drawer can be opened and closed dozens of times a day.
- Cheap hinges slowly lose their alignment, leaving uneven gaps between shutters.
- Unbranded runners can rust and stiffen in a humid, coastal climate like Bhavnagar's.
- Good hardware can be adjusted for years; poor hardware usually has to be replaced.
Hinges: the hardest-working part
Modern modular furniture uses concealed (cup) hinges: hidden inside the cabinet when the door is closed, and adjustable in three directions with a screwdriver.
- Full overlay, half overlay or inset: the type depends on how the shutter sits over the cabinet side.
- Soft-close: a built-in damper slows the door in the last few centimetres so it closes gently and silently. Hettich's Sensys hinges, for example, have this built in.
- Special hinges: for corner cabinets, thick doors, glass doors and doors that need a wide opening angle.
Drawer runners and drawer systems
- Ball-bearing telescopic runners: fitted on the sides of the drawer. Economical and reliable for light loads.
- Concealed runners: fitted under the drawer, so they are invisible. Smoother and quieter, usually with soft-close. Hettich's Quadro and Actro are examples.
- Complete drawer systems: slim metal drawer sides combined with the runners, such as Hettich InnoTech, ArciTech and AvanTech YOU. They carry heavy loads, look sleek and are the best choice for kitchen drawers full of pots and pans.
- Push-to-open: for handle-less designs, a light push opens the drawer.
Tip: steel utensils are heavy. Ask for the load rating of your kitchen drawers, not just the brand.
Lift-up fittings
Wall cabinets that open upwards, above the hob or in a TV unit, use lift-up fittings that hold the door open at any height and close it gently. Hettich's Lift Advanced range is one example.
Sliding systems for wardrobes
Sliding wardrobe doors run on top-hung or bottom-running tracks. The quality of the track and the rollers decides how smoothly a tall, heavy door moves and whether it stays aligned. Good systems, such as Hettich's TopLine range, also include soft-close stoppers.
Kitchen and wardrobe accessories
Wire baskets, tall pantry pull-outs, corner carousels, under-sink units, trouser pull-outs and shoe racks all run on hardware too. Quality pull-outs make the deep corners of a kitchen genuinely usable.
